Of the six small cat species endemic to Africa, four can be found in southern Africa. My guests and I were extremely lucky to spot one of them, the African wildcat during our safari in Etosha National Park.
Having seen a pride of Africa’s biggest cat, lion, herds of elephants and a host of plains game, I am happy to say that it was a thrilling day at “the office”. While heading back to the lodge just before sunset, we had a pleasant surprise! We were lucky enough to see an African wildcat taking a leisurely stroll on the side of the road.
As these felines are mainly nocturnal, I believe that this magnificent small cat had begun its hunt slightly early, giving us an extremely rare opportunity to see it up close and clearly.
Despite its wide distribution and varied habitat, I am certain that not many safari guides, let alone self-drive tourists, have had the chance to get so close to this gorgeous feline.
